Studio Notes

From the studio.

Studio Notes are a place for Janet to share observations, works in progress and reflections as the work evolves.

Some notes may be short. Others may take more time. They may include works in progress, material experiments, finished pieces, studio reflections, collection updates or the story behind a particular work.

Blessings from the Universe

I sit here looking at four pieces in various stages of completion. All four canvases came to me as gifts, more blessings from the universe.

Read Note
Three sculpted clay faces raised on dowels set in solid wood blocks, arranged as a triad, each with an aquiline nose, firm mouth and tightly curled hair, painted in aged white.

Sculpture

The Three Muses

Inspired by classic pseudo-Roman busts, I formed these three faces. Almost brothers, almost judges, almost… they are Muses.

Read Note
Painting of two geishas resting close together, one watching over the other, faces pale against dark hair and a red trimmed patterned robe, in soft greys, white, blue and deep charcoal.

Painting & Sculpture

The Geishas

The Geishas came as a challenge. One of my favourite paintings, so I set out to make a clay version.

Read Note
A sculpted head of a goddess with closed eyes and serene face, gold leafed skin and rose lips, wearing a tall dark headdress smudged with bronze, on a shaped torso plinth.

Sculpture

Goddess Sculpture

Moulding the clay, letting my hands feel their way to a naked head of almost perfect proportions. She has regal wisdom, a hint of pride. Why not?
