The Three Muses

Three sculpted clay faces raised on dowels set in solid wood blocks, arranged as a triad, each with an aquiline nose, firm mouth and tightly curled hair, painted in aged white.
The Three Muses, bisque fired clay on wood blocks.

Inspired by classic images of historic pseudo-Roman busts, I formed these three faces. Frozen in clay, raised on dowels based in solid wood blocks. They can stand alone or, as I enjoy them, a triad.

Each face has an aquiline nose, firm mouth and slightly hooded eyes, a suggestion of hair styled in tight curls. Almost brothers, almost judges, almost… they are Muses, therefore can be what the viewer sees them as.

I used little paint on the bisque fired clay, whitening it and ageing the white, choosing to accept they speak for themselves.
