The Geishas

Painting of two geishas resting close together, one watching over the other, faces pale against dark hair and a red trimmed patterned robe, in soft greys, white, blue and deep charcoal.
The Geishas, oil and pastel painting.

The Geishas came as a challenge. I do enjoy the idea of a sculptured piece to complement a painting. The Geishas is one of my favourite paintings, so I set out to make a clay version.

One Geisha respectfully watching over the other, the clay version being, ironically, more flat, as it needed (in my mind) to lay on a surface, contrasting with the painting that, whilst emerging from a flat surface, stands.

Another contrast being the painted Geishas is on a wash of oil paint, giving a shadowy background, with soft pastel bringing the images to life. The clay version I needed to paint effectively, giving them more dense colour, so whilst inspired by the sculpture as an addition to the original painting, they can stand (lay) alone.

The clay version of The Gieshas, two sculpted faces laid on a pale surface, one figure resting its head against the other, painted in white, black, blue and red.
The clay version, made to stand (or lay) alongside the painting.
